FAA Medicals
First-Class Medicals are required for airline transport pilots.
Second-Class Medicals are required for commercial pilots.
Third-Class Medicals are required for private/recreational pilots.
Price for First, Secord and Third-Class Medicals: $175
Price for Medicals for pilots on a Special Issuance: $225
Some pilots getting a First-Class Medical, will require an EKG under the following circumstances:
1) The first medical after a pilot turns 35 years of age.
2) Once per year after a pilot turns 40 years of age
Price for an EKG: $75
How long is your medical valid for?
While medicals in general are valid for either 5 years or 2 years (depending on a pilot's age), the privledges associated with them downgrade with time and it may be necessary to have another medical to maintain the reqired level of privledges.
Under the age of 40, medicals are good for 5 years.
1st Class: Good for one year, then drops to third class for the remaining four.
2nd Class: Good for one year, then drops to third class for the remaining four.
3rd Class: Good for 5 years.
Over the age of 40, medicals are good for 2 years.
1st Class: Good for 6 months, then drops to 2nd class for 6 months, then drops to 3rd class for the remaining year.
2nd Class: Good for 1 year, then drops to 3rd class for the remaining year.
3rd Class: Good for 2 years.
